Background Information
Since 1956, the Trans‐Jordan Landfill has served the solid waste needs of the communities of the southern half of Salt Lake County. The landfill has a footprint of approximately 189 acres, and is located on the west side of the city of South Jordan. In 2015, the Landfill received approximately 288,000 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW), and has received approximately 8.9 million tons of MSW since inception. The facility also receives and processes approximately 24,000 tons of green waste each year.
Trans‐Jordan’s solid waste disposal operations are regulated by RCRA Subtitle D (40 CFR 258). The facility is also subject to NSPS and NESHAP under the Clean Air Act, and maintains a Title V Operating Permit. Trans‐Jordan actively recovers landfill gas that is produced by anaerobic decomposition of the MSW, and combusts the gas as a fuel in an on‐site energy facility operated by Granger Energy. The facility currently provides 4.8 megawatts of green power 24/7 to the electrical distribution grid, which is the equivalent to the full‐time power needs of ~2,900 homes.
Areas of interest at the facility include the Public Convenience Center, a full household hazardous waste collection facility, greenwaste composting, landfilling areas, and landfill gas‐to‐energy plant.
