Air Quality: Science for Solutions is holding a one-day conference emphasizing scientific progress in the understanding of Utah’s complicated and unique air quality issues.

This is the first of an annual conference series organized by the University of Utah, Utah State University, Brigham Young University, Weber State University, and the Utah Division of Air Quality.

Thanks to the generosity of the conference sponsors, regular registration is only $10 if you register by March 15.  After that time, late registration is $20.

Join us for a tour of the Trans Jordan Landfill at 10473 South Bacchus Highway in South Jordan on October 12, 2016 at noon until 1:30.   A light lunch will be provided, so please send your RSVP to Jenny at Jenny.Esker@riotinto.com before October 11, 2016.  There is no cost associated with this tour.

Background Information

Since 1956, the Trans‐Jordan Landfill has served the solid waste needs of the communities of the southern half of Salt Lake County. The landfill has a footprint of approximately 189 acres, and is located on the west side of the city of South Jordan. In 2015, the Landfill received approximately 288,000 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW), and has received approximately 8.9 million tons of MSW since inception.  The facility also receives and processes approximately 24,000 tons of green waste each year.

Trans‐Jordan’s solid waste disposal operations are regulated by RCRA Subtitle D (40 CFR 258). The facility is also subject to NSPS and NESHAP under the Clean Air Act, and maintains a Title V Operating Permit. Trans‐Jordan actively recovers landfill gas that is produced by anaerobic decomposition of the MSW, and combusts the gas as a fuel in an on‐site energy facility operated by Granger Energy. The facility currently provides 4.8 megawatts of green power 24/7 to the electrical distribution grid, which is the equivalent to the full‐time power needs of ~2,900 homes.

Areas of interest at the facility include the Public Convenience Center, a full household hazardous waste collection facility, greenwaste composting, landfilling areas, and landfill gas‐to‐energy plant.

This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Kerry Kelly, Assistant Professor in the University of Utah Chemical Engineering Department and Vice Chair of the Utah Air Quality Board.   She will discuss her research as well as highlighting other Air Quality research and policy actions.

Utah Division of Air Quality representatives, Patrick Barickman and Jay Baker, summarize impacts to Utah and the Intermountain West as a result of the new, lower Ozone NAAQS. The presentation will include unique difficulties posed to the Intermountain West by the lower ozone standard, current monitoring data from areas of concern within Utah, an overview of implementation timelines, and the potential State Implementation Plan process.
